What are Motiva Qid Technology Implants?

What is Qid technology and how does it work in implants?
It’s a new innovation aimed to improve patient safety as it allows in-depth records to be held about the particular implant all within a tiny device. Patients have the option with Motiva implants to contain a ‘micro transponder’, essentially a small device that contains all the important information about your implant including:
- Brand
- Size
- Serial number
- Volume
- Location of the surgery clinic
- Manufacturing and surgery date
The 12mm micro transponder is around the size of standard dice and is placed in the gel filling of the implant. This technology used in Motiva implants is called Q Inside Safety technology, also known as Qid.
Why are they used?
This technology allows surgeons and clinics to quickly identify patients in an unlikely event of an implant recall. The benefit of it all being digital means there is no need for paperwork. A special handheld reader can externally scan the micro transponder and read an e-series number. This number can be used to retrieve all the details. If there are any problems with the implants, this is an easy way to help diagnose any problems. It is also incredibly useful if the patient wants future breast surgery, such as replacement following capsular contracture or wanting to change implant size.

Is it safe?
The micro transponder used in Motiva implants has the CE mark, which means that it complies with the health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold in the European Economic Area. Should the patient need an MRI scan, there are no safety issues with having one although the micro transponder may block the visualisation of a small area of breast tissue near it. If required, other scans may be used to visualise the area.
This modern approach to implant safety is likely to become more and more common with many surgeons choosing to only use implants with Qid technology to improve the long term safety of implants.
