Prehabilitation for ACL Reconstruction and Meniscus Repair

The goal of this surgery is to stabilise your knee, relieve pain and enable a return to a much higher level of physical activity than possible without the surgery. If you prepare well for the surgery, you can significantly improve your recovery and achieve a better outcome. You will also reduce the possibility of complications and return to activities more quickly.

Look after your general health.

  • Smoking affects the body’s ability to heal.
  • Drinking excess alcohol affects the body’s ability to heal.
  • Carrying excess weight places extra strain on joints and increases the risk of post-op complications.
  • Keep as active as possible by finding an activity that doesn’t compromise your knee condition.
  • Sleep well as the body heals while sleeping, and you will feel more able to cope with the demanding post-op rehab.
  • Consider taking Vitamin D, as this can help your bones and muscles heal.
  • Consider relaxation techniques such as guided meditation or breathing techniques to aid pain control.

Look after your knee.

If you maximise your range of movement and strength prior to surgery, the better your outcome will be. There are plenty of resources you can find online for exercises specific to this surgery. To get the very best outcome, the exercises need to be specific to your current presentation, so it's best to attend a physiotherapist who can fully assess your knee and prescribe a personal and appropriate programme.

Prepare your home, family and friends.

Make a list of all the things you may need help with, such as childcare, walking the dog, shopping, gardening, housework and cooking etc. Make sure you ask friends and family to help when needed.

  • You will be advised not to drive for a short while, so ensure you arrange how you will travel in this period.
  • Put everything you need in a place that is easily accessible to reduce the need to squat or crouch.
  • Consider buying a non-slip mat for the shower.

Following this simple advice will make the transition to your normal way of life much easier – Good luck and hope everything goes well for you!
