Overview
Trigger finger and trigger thumb are medically called stenosing tenosynovitis; they can be treated by minor hand surgery called trigger finger release. The procedure will clear the blockages which cause restricted mobility in the finger or thumb tendon, allowing for unhindered tendon movement and improved flexibility and mobility in the fingers or thumbs.
Trigger finger or trigger thumb is a condition that can be painful and troublesome for a patient. The condition can be identified by mild or severe symptoms.
Mild symptoms include:
- pain around the base of the affected finger or thumb
- some 'catching' or 'jarring' when bending and straightening the finger
- stiffness or a clicking sensation in the finger when bending or straightening
Severe symptoms might include:
- any of the above symptoms but more frequent and pronounced
- swelling at the base of the affected finger or thumb
- finger or thumb locking to reduce mobility completely
The procedure is almost always a day case and performed under a local anaesthetic. It can take between 10 and 20 minutes to complete.
Patients should follow the surgeon's aftercare instructions carefully following the surgery. It can take up to four or six months for swelling and stiffness to completely subside and the finger to gain full mobility. Hand therapy may be necessary if the stiffness is significant.
Prices in London
Trigger Finger Release surgery in London usually costs between around £1,800 and £1,850, but that price can sometimes change depending on a number of factors including the surgeon's expertise, the complexity of the individual case or a patient's medical history.
Patients will receive a customised price for their surgery after the consultation with a surgeon. Once a price has been offered, patients can rest assured knowing there will not be any hidden fees or added costs, the price will cover all fees related to your hospital stay, including:
The Consultation
The consultation with an orthopaedic specialist can last up to an hour. During the consultation, the patient and surgeon will discuss a number of topics relating to surgery, including:
- What symptoms the patient is experiencing from trigger finger or trigger thumb
- Which surgical techniques would be used in the procedure
- Medical history and overall health of the patient
- Recovery and aftercare information
The consultation will also include a physical examination of the finger or thumb.
Patients should listen to the surgeon's pre-op and post-op instructions and follow all aftercare advice as closely as possible to maximise the treatment results. Whether a patient may read online or hear from elsewhere, the surgeon's advice should always be considered more reliable. They know the patient's specific case and may create a unique and personalised pre-and post-op plan for each patient.
Patients should always make efforts to communicate clearly at every stage of the process and ask any questions to ensure they are only committing to surgery when they feel informed about every stage. It is therefore worth preparing some questions in advance. Some examples are listed below.
- When will I be able to return to work?
- How can I best look after my scars?
- How regularly should I be washing the treatment area?
